This Simple Baby Cardigan is the perfect basic sweater for the darling new baby in your life. You get to add unique touches through color choice or special buttons.

Machine-washable yarn is great for tired mamas with lots of baby laundry, and worsted weight is perfect for a speedy sweater since it will be outgrown in only a few months. But those months will be adorable and very special in a lovingly crocheted cardi perfect for boys and girls alike!

Sized to fit babies 6-12 mos.
Finished Chest Circumference: 20.5” [52 cm]

Baby Bee Soft and Sleek (100% Low Pill Acrylic; 182 yds [166 m]/ 3.5 oz [100 g]: #4 Seafoam Marled, 2 skeins

 



 

For Yarn Substitutions:
279 yd [256 m]/5.4 oz [153 g]
of #4 Medium Weight Yarn (worsted)

 



 

CROCHET HOOK
Size I/9 [5.5 mm]

 



 

TOOLS
Yarn needle
5 buttons (7/8”)
Sewing thread or embroidery floss for sewing on buttons
Sewing needle for sewing on buttons

 

 

GAUGE
13.5 sts and 8.5 rows = 4” [10 cm]
in double crochet stitch

 



 

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
LC long chain: This pattern uses a single long chain instead of the conventional 3-chain double crochet turning chain worked as follows: Draw up a loop to the height of the dc about to be worked, work first dc in same st. This eliminates the need for a turning chain and the unsightly gaps that accompany the standard turning chain.

 

 

NOTES
• This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
• The sweater body is worked in a single piece from the bottom up, seamed at the shoulders, and the sleeves are worked seamlessly in turned rounds from armhole to cuff. The neckband and button bands are then worked seamlessly onto the garment.
• This pattern is unisex and offers reversed button/buttonhole band instructions for boys and girls.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONS
SWEATER BODY
Row 1 (RS): Make 66 fdc OR ch 66 and LC, dc in each ch across…66 fdc or 66 dc made.
Row 2-13: LC, dc in each st across, turn.

 



 

LEFT FRONT
Set-Up Row (WS): LC, dc in next 16 sts, turn…16 dc made.
Rows 1-4: LC, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 5 (shaping row): LC, dc in next 7 sts, dc2tog over last 2 sts, turn…8 sts rem.
Row 7 (shaping row): LC, dc2tog over first two sts, dc in each st across, turn…7 sts rem.
Row 8 (shaping row): LC, dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog over last 2 sts…6 sts rem.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 20” tail.

 

 

UPPER BACK
Join yarn in 17th SWEATER BODY st (this is also the next unworked dc next to the LEFT FRONT just made) and pull up a loop.

Set-Up Row (WS): LC, dc in next 34 sts, turn…34 dc made.
Rows 1-6: LC, dc in each st across, turn.

 

 

Shape Back Neck
Row 7 (Right Back Neck): LC, dc in next 6 sts. Do not turn. Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail. Skip next 22 sts, join yarn in 23rd st,
Row 7, cont’d (Left Back Neck): LC, dc in next 6 sts. Do not turn.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail.

 

 

RIGHT FRONT
Join yarn at Right Front edge, pull up a loop.
Set-Up Row (WS): LC, dc in next 16 sts, turn…16 dc made.
Rows 1-4: LC, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 5 (shaping row): LC, dc2tog over first 2 sts, dc in next 7 sts, , turn…8 sts rem.
Row 7 (shaping row): LC, dc in first 6 sts, dc2tog over last two sts,, turn…7 sts rem.
Row 8 (shaping row): LC, dc2tog over first 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts, …6 sts rem.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 20” tail.

 

 

SEAM SHOULDERS
Turn SWEATER BODY wrong side out and seam front and back shoulders by sewing or slip-stitching a seam along the shoulder edge. Repeat for second shoulder. Turn SWEATER BODY right side out.

 

 

 

SLEEVE (make 2)
Note: the sleeves are worked in turned rounds so that the sleeve fabric matches the body fabric worked flat.
Join yarn at underarm and pull up a loop.
Rnd 1: LC, work 27 dc evenly spaced around armhole opening, sl st to first dc to join rnd, turn…27 dc.
Rnd 2: LC, dc in each dc around, sl st to first dc to join rnd, turn.
Rnd 3 (decrease rnd): LC, dc in first dc, dc2tog over next 2 dc, dc in each dc to last 2 dc, dc2tog over last 2 dc, sl st to first dc to join rnd , turn…25 sts rem.
Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 5 (decrease rnd): Rep Rnd 3…23 sts rem.
Rnds 6-7: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 8 (decrease rnd): Rep Rnd 3…21 sts rem.
Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 10 (decrease rnd): Rep Rnd 3…19 sts rem.
Rnds 11-12: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 13 (decrease rnd): Rep Rnd 3…17 sts rem.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail.

 

 

 

NECKBAND
With Right Side of the garment facing, join yarn at neck corner of Right Front and pull up a loop.
Row 1: Ch 1, work 55 sc evenly spaced across neckline to neck corner of Left Front, turn…55 sc.
Rows 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail.

 

 

 

BUTTON BAND
For girl’s sweater: Join yarn at hem corner of LEFT FRONT and pull up a loop.
For boy’s sweater: Join yarn at hem corner of RIGHT FRONT and pull up a loop.
Row 1: Ch 1, work 30 sc evenly spaced along FRONT and NECKBAND, turn…30 sc.
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail.

 



 

 

BUTTONHOLE BAND
For girl’s sweater: Join yarn at hem corner of RIGHT FRONT and pull up a loop.
For boy’s sweater: Join yarn at hem corner of LEFT FRONT and pull up a loop.
Row 1: Ch 1, work 30 sc evenly spaced along FRONT and NECKBAND, turn…30 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, [ch 2, sk 2, sc in next 4 sc] four times, ch 2, sk 2, sc in last 2 sc, turn…5 buttonholes made.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, [2 sc in next 2-ch sp, sc in next 4 sc] five times, sc in last 2 sc, turn…30 sc.
Row 5: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off. Break yarn leaving 6” tail.

 

 

 

FINISHING
Weave in yarn ends. Sew buttons in place using sewing needle and thread or embroidery floss. Steam lightly to set stitches and relax any tendency for the crochet to curl at the corners.
